Youth Group Fundraiser

This month the Youth are getting ready to start "fishing" people's yards! This is how it works: for $10 you can have the fish sent to someone's house and staked in their front yard. Then, it costs $10 for that person to have the Youth remove the fish from their yard and sent to someone else. For $20, you can purchase "insurance" if you do not want fish in your yard at all. So watch out for the fish - they will be coming soon!

2007 Mission Trip

Our Youth group and adult chaperones combined with the group from St. Jacob's Lutheran Church and had a great time on our mission trip to the TEAMeffort work camp in Copperhill, Tennessee (in the Appalachian Mountains). We worked with TEAMeffort counselors Joe and Jordan to repair Ms. Lois' and her 91-year-old mother's house in Murphy, North Carolina. We primed and painted her house and shed, repaired the roofing, cleared a small "landslide" and built a cement block retaining wall, replaced rotted house siding, built a roof over her doorway, built a wolf house (for Ms. Lois' pet wolf Wiley!), built storage shelving, replaced a portion of the porch ceiling, did landscaping and built a garden bench, hung a wooden swing, planted flowers, hauled away mounds of trash and started pouring a cement pad for her entranceway. We also found time for whitewater rafting, horseback riding, the high ropes course, and mountain biking. There were over 300 campers that week reaching out to the community in Christ's name. Photos from the trip are going up on our Gallery, and all "shareholders" are invited to the upcoming appreciation dinner to hear firsthand about our experience. We are Christ's hands and feet in this world!

Race Track Ministry

Did you know you can still find babies in stables? When Trinity's Helping Hands Ministries visited Thistledown Race Track, they saw the cutest infant whose father was a jockey. Many of the 800 people working "behind the track" live in dormitory rooms or very small rooms above the stables. When children are in the family, they have to move to a nearby trailer park. Helping Hands visited with Rev. Vincent Harris, the American Baptist Missionary whose work at the track encompasses many more things than just the spiritual parts of the lives of those he serves. He helps to arrange for medical needs, clothing, transportation, as well as lending an ear when someone needs someone to talk to. Race Track Ministry is a self-supporting endeavor. If you would like to learn more about how you can help this ministry, contact Wilma Nicholson or Carol Warner.

Watoto Children's Choir from Uganda, Africa

We had a great experience with the Watoto Children's Choir again on February 5, 2008! Although the Watoto Choir generally does not visit the same location more than once, we were blessed to host them for a third time! It was a great evening of music, energy and hope.

The mission of Watoto is to raise the next generation of Ugandan leaders by placing parentless children in families where the necessary love, care, spiritual discipleship and physical needs are provided. Their goal is to equip these precious children with the essential moral values and life skills that will enable them to make a significant and lasting impact. See www.watoto.com for more information.

Unleavened Communion Bread Recipe:

1 cup flour

3 tablespoons sugar

1/3 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup shortening

2 to 2-1/2 teaspoons milk

Sift flour, sugar and salt. Cut in shortening. Add a little bit of milk at a time, and only enough to form dough. Roll dough (using a floured rolling pin and floured surface) to 1/4" thick. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet or cookie sheet with parchment paper. Cut into 1/2" squares using a pastry cutter. Bake at 375 degrees until light brown, about 7-10 minutes.
